Does white noise reduce SIDS?
There is no solid evidence that white noise reduces the risk of SIDS, and it is not part of standard safe sleep recommendations. The major proven ways to lower SIDS risk are placing baby on their back for every sleep, using a firm, flat mattress, keeping the cot free of pillows and loose bedding, and avoiding overheating and smoke exposure. White noise might help a baby sleep more soundly by masking background noise, but deeper sleep does not necessarily mean safer sleep. Because of this, you should think of white noise as a comfort or settling aid, not a safety device. Always follow your local safe sleep guidelines regardless of whether you use white noise.
